For over 40 years, Friends of Mallacoota has been a steadfast advocate for the preservation and enhancement of our community’s natural environment and distinctive character. Our efforts have spanned a wide range of campaigns, from protecting the iconic Bastion Point to promoting sustainable initiatives within the community to submissions on fuel management, native bird protection and wildlife and flora and fauna legislation.
Key Achievements:
Mallacoota Gum Protection: Successfully secured National Trust classification for The Mallacoota Gum in 1982, followed by fencing the area in 1986 to safeguard this natural treasure.
Walking Track Upgrades: Obtained funding to enable local residents to upgrade the Mallacoota Walking Track, realign the Genoa Peak walking track, and restore the Betka Beach area, enhancing our community’s accessibility and natural beauty.
Coastal and Inlet Foreshore Conservation: Secured the classification of Mallacoota Coastal and Inlet Foreshore by the National Trust, ensuring long-term protection of these critical ecosystems.
Community Solar Initiative: Launched a solar panel bulk-buy scheme, empowering the community to embrace renewable energy and reduce our carbon footprint.
Devlin’s Gully Restoration:: Led the restoration of Devlin’s Gully, revitalising this important natural area near the camp park.
Plastic-Free Mallacoota: Championed the successful Plastic Bag Free Mallacoota campaign, reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainability in our community.
Kitchen to Compost: The Friends initiated this recycling program of kitchen waste and vigorously pursued making it a regular fixture, following East Gippsland’s Shire’s initial trial.
Bastion Point: Environment Victoria awarded Friends of Mallacoota for its steadfast lobbying against a breakwall in the Save Bastion Point campaign.
With a team of passionate locals and nature enthusiasts, we run hands-on programs like bushcare and coastcare, town clean-ups, and a local native plant nursery. Our work extends to advocacy efforts to ensure the voices of our natural habitats are heard in policy discussions.
