Kitchen to Compost (K2C)
We are lucky to have a Kitchen to Compost (K2C) organic waste system whereby all food scraps in the Council green bins are taken to a special site for processing into garden-worthy compost.
The only one in the East Gippsland Shire, the K2C system has been operating successfully for many years. As well as K2C food waste, garden waste such as grass clippings, leaves and small branches can be placed in the Green Waste Bin.
- Special benchtop compost containers are available for each household from the Shire Service Centre.
- Rolls of compostable bags are also available there free of charge.
- All food scraps can be placed in the bins, including bones and soiled kitchen paper.
- Organic materials can be placed loose in the green bin .
- Bags are placed in your Green Waste Bin to be collected each fortnight.
Terracycle
Friends of Mallacoota is also a registered Terracycle Community Collection Hub to collect and recycle rubbish that is not generally accepted by traditional municipal recycling services.
Terracycle is a world-wide organisation offering free recycling solutions for typically hard-to-recycle waste streams. The Terracycle process is sponsored by commercial companies who agree to take back recycled items, many of which will be made into other products as part of the circular economy.
Of the hundreds of products possible, we have chosen five items to get us started :
- Plastic bottle tops (eg milk and juice lids)
- Beauty and hair products (all brands)
- Writing instruments and packaging (eg pens, highlighters)
- Toothbrushes and oral care products (all brands)
- Empty medication blister packs (currently suspended)
The Terracycle Drop-off Depot is located in front of the St. Peters Op Shop behind the church. Residents and visitors are encouraged to use the clearly marked boxes rather than binning these items.
Container Deposit Scheme
We also promote the Victorian Container Deposit Scheme for bottles and aluminium cans as well as other Council-run initiatives.
