Every week this group tackles various weedy hotspots around Mallacoota. We use hand weeding and herbicides to control infestations of weeds in bushland, along the coast (including Gabo Island), and on disturbed areas of public land.
Originally established in 2006 as the ‘Weed Warriors’, we’ve continued to target invasive weeds as well as undertake bushland regeneration and planting projects to help restore our natural environment.
Our priority weeds are:
We encourage local residents to recognise these weeds, remove them, and plant local native alternatives in their garden to prevent future escapes and support wildlife.
The BushCare Group meets every Thursday at 12.45 for two hours, for our regular weeding work. New volunteers are welcome; just show up to the carpark behind Mallacoota Foodworks. Gloves and equipment provided. Work is followed by afternoon tea at a local café.
We also organise ad hoc planting and bush regeneration days, which we advertise through our membership emails and online.
With a team of passionate locals and nature enthusiasts, we run hands-on programs like bushcare and coastcare, town clean-ups, and a local native plant nursery. Our work extends to advocacy efforts to ensure the voices of our natural habitats are heard in policy discussions.
