Deep Listening to Nature with Andrew Skeoch

How much of the natural world around us do we really hear?

Friends of Mallacoota is delighted to welcome Andrew Skeoch, acoustic ecologist, naturalist, author and one of Australia’s best-known nature sound recordists, for a special presentation exploring the extraordinary sounds and communications of the natural world.

Andrew will guide us into a deeper way of listening to nature – developing our listening skills, identifying species by ear, recognising behaviours and vocal repertoires, and discovering what the voices of other creatures can tell us about their lives.

His presentations combine evocative field recordings, visual analysis of sound and fascinating observations drawn from decades of listening to wild environments around the world. Through Listening Earth, Andrew has documented natural soundscapes across many continents and published more than 100 recordings.

What to expect

This is not simply a talk about birdsong. Andrew explores how animals communicate, how listening can help us identify species and interpret behaviour, and how paying closer attention to sound can deepen our relationship with the living world around us.

His book, Deep Listening to Nature, invites readers to “open our ears to the natural world”, exploring species identification, animal communication and the ways listening can help us develop a more personal connection with nature. The book is accompanied by hundreds of field recordings made during Andrew’s travels and research.
